SPEECH 2009

Registration is open for all students in the 6th through 8th grades interested in participating in the Visitation CYO Speech Program.

In the first few sessions, the participants are given an excerpt from a famous speech to prepare and present.  The rest of the time is dedicated to the writing and presentation of original speeches created by the students.  Since our time is short, speech team members must be committed to attending all 9 sessions and completing all at home assignments.  Parents must also be willing to work with their sons and daughters at home by watching them practice their speeches and helping them to do the research for their original pieces.

The moderators try to make speech a fun experience, but it is by no means a social gathering time.  It is a great opportunity for young people who want to improve their public speaking skills.  Students are required to memorize both their excerpt and original pieces which means, that they will need to dedicate time at home to this program.  We often have as many as 90 students involved; so students and parents need to be aware of the time and commitment of the adult and teenage volunteers who keep the speech team going.  Students are required to respect the classrooms that the teachers so graciously allow us to use and the moderators who are giving of their time and expertise.  Under the discretion of the moderators, a participant could be asked to leave the program if they are not abiding by the standards.

Final evening, is an evening set aside for the speech team members to show their talents to you, the parents.  It is a formal event and only “Sunday best” should be worn by the participants.  Being a part of Final Evening is also a mandatory piece of the program.

Questions or concerns should be directed to the moderator who is working with your child.  Moderators will be assigned at the first session and they will make phone numbers and email addresses available at that time.  We are all looking forward to a great speech year in 2009.
